Heart attacks occur when arteries get clogged and prevent blood and oxygen from getting to the organ.“Smoking is the biggest [heart attack] risk factor because it increases inflammation in the arteries, which destabilizes plaque and can cause plaque rupture,” says Tracy Stevens, M.D., medical director of St. Luke’s Muriel I. Kauffman Women’s Heart Center and professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine.
